Patient Assistance

Financial assistance

At the Cancer Association of Anderson, Anderson County cancer patients in active treatment are our top priority, though we continue to support survivors following treatment with many services. For patients in active treatment, we offer financial assistance for treatment-related expenses up to $1,000 a year.  For both patients and survivors, we offer information and referral about cancer services in Anderson County and beyond, emotional support through support groups, oncology rehabilitation at the AnMed Health LifeChoice Gym (during treatment and up to a year afterward) and a 10-week Survivor School for women, as well as the opportunity to establish informal connections to others who have fought cancer and survived. There is no charge for any of our services.

We have a simple application that can be filled out at your home or at our office.  (Note: If you are a new patient, please plan your visit to our office before noon or after 2 p.m., when we can give you our best service.) Once the form is returned, including the one signed by your doctor, we can help you with expenses such as purchase of prescription medicine and co-pays for medicine, local travel, money for long-distance travel to medical centers out of the area and help paying health insurance premiums. For local travel, we give 20 cents per mile for gas, up to $100 per month.

Wig and Hat Room

For patients who will undergo chemotherapy or radiation that will result in hair loss, the Cancer Association has a wig and hat room where patients can find head coverings for no charge. Along with wigs, CAA has new and gently used breast prostheses and mastectomy bras. We will pay for uninsured breast cancer patients to be professionally fitted for their first bra and prosthesis.

Information and referral

CAA has information on a variety of cancer types. We will do internet searches for you. We also publish a local services guide, Cancer Services in Anderson County, which is available for download here or in printed form at our office at no charge.

Emotional support

We offer emotional support through support groups (please see the support group page) and connection to other people who have fought cancer and survived. We also pay for any Anderson County resident who is in active treatment for cancer or within a year of completing treatment to take the eight-week “Well Fit” program at AnMed Health’s LifeChoice. Call 222.3500 for information. Our Survivor School is for women who have completed treatment for any kind of cancer (or who are in lifelong maintenance treatment).  Survivor School instructors share techniques for finding the “new normal” in their lives.
